Well, it's official. . .
I actually paid $10 dollars and $.40 cents a yard for a PIECE of FABRIC!!!
I can't BELIEVE it!!!
I don't want to BELIEVE it!!!
I just never thought it would happen so quickly!
It seems like yesterday you could buy Aunt Gracie Fabrics for around $6.00 a yard and now it's in the $8's and other fabric was around $8.00 a yard and now it's quickly approaching $10.00 a yard. YIKES! My pocketbook hurts!
Have any of you paid over $10 a yard for fabric from a quilt store, yet?
I'd love to see pictures of the fabric you were willing to pay that much for. Just leave me a link in comments if you're interested in playing along.
Thanks!
I just thought it'd be fun to see the fabrics that talk us into taking them home with us!

quilt shops here charge $9.50 to $10.50 a yard.
I very rarely buy it at that price unless I am in dire need of it.
I wait for the Fat quarter shop to have their 50% off sales.
Oh my word, I haven't seen it $10 a yard yet. Is this what I am to expect next time I go to the quilt shops. Maybe it's a good thing I don't go that often. YIKES!!!
That is a gorgeous fabric that screams buy me! $10 a metre is a sale price here. Quality fabric at the LQS is $20 to $30 Aussie dollars. Non-quilt shop fabric is around $10 to $20 with occasional sales for $3 to $5 etc. I'm totally sewing from stash at the moment. Most of my fabrics were bought on sale or given to me, although there have been a few full-price because I just had to have it...
When it speaks to our heart, it speaks to our heart. We really have to turn a blind eye to the price sometimes because it is just too painful.....Love the fabric

It really hurts to pay that much or more but sometimes you just have to have it! I ease my mind by keeping my average as low as possible. My most expensive weakness is the Hoffman Bali Batiks! What incredible quality! Have a look at my new blog post--SMITTEN..... http://kittskrafts.blogspot.com/2009/03/smitten.html
=^..^=
Ack! Say it ain't so! I have a heart attack when I have to pay $9 -- sadly, I think it's going to get worse. Love your print though ;-)!
I haven't paid $10 a yard yet for anything and am hoping to never pay that. Most LQS here have fabrics that are an average of $9 a yard.
I can't say I have, but it is getting harder and harder not to find fabric in that range. Some here is up to 12.00 yard. Nice fabric.
The new fabrics coming in to the shop where I work are $10.30 to $10.50 a yard. Fabric prices are going up just like every other item we purchase, sad to say.
I try to support my LQSs because I want them to be here, but I try to buy sale stuff first. When I find the high-priced stuff, I surf the web until I find the best price. Over the Rainbow told us that one manufacturer was planning to dictate the price LQSs had to charge for their lines of fabric, which I thought was pretty outrageous - so did she, so she stopped buying their fabric for her on-line shop. The manufacturer has backed down for now. I know it costs money to make a product, but just about all fabric is printed in So. Korea or China, so perhaps the increase is tariffs. Still, one has to wonder if these companies will price themselves out of business.
If the USA still had all the fabric manufacturers they once had, especially here in N.C., you wouldn't be paying over $10 a yard for fabric!! I refuse to pay that much, I will make quilts out of used clothing from the thrift store before I buckle and pay such a ridiculous price. It is all a matter of what is important I guess, and I feel the quilting fabric folks need to get a grip in today's dire economic times and find ways to lower their costs. Just MHO, Ani
I understand if it calls to you, you have to have it - but I think everyone I know is needing to think twice before paying those exorbitant prices for fabric when wanting to make a full size quilt. If it is for a small project that needs just the right touch - maybe.
Oh yes, we've done it! Not sorry either :) The only thing that makes me sorry is the fabrics that are still sitting in the stash. The one made into a quilt are worth it!
not yet but I am sure it will happen one of these days..
I buy fabric when its on sale.
Kathie
great fabric you bought though!
When I still lived in Australia I used to pay anywhere between $14 - $20 a yard, then I found online stores in the US to buy from. Even with the postage is was far less than shopping locally, and of course the exchange rate was good then.
I wish that was the price I paid for fabric from a quilt shop. Here in Canada, because we need to deal with distributors, the price can be anywhere from $12 to $22 a meter. Doesn't stop me from buying, maybe just not as much. Unfortunately this is the price we pay to play. Could be worst, we could be spening this money at the Casions. Take care, and enjoy.
Oh my goodness, the most I paid for a yard has been 9 and thats for a batik!!! Try Connecting Threads online. They have a great sele4ction and no yard of material more that 5.95. I have been buying from them for several years and have never gotten a b ad piece, the quality of the material is great. Also Pat Sloan online she has some beautiful patterns and her material is not 10 a yr at least I never saw that price. Try them. You can buy charm packs & fat quarters of almost all of the mate4rial so you can see if you like it Happy Quilting!!!
My favorite quilt shop (sooo not local!) is in Canmore, Alberta in Canada. $10/yd would be very cheap there, more like $14-$16per yard, but what a selection! I guess it's too cold to grow cotton anywhere in Canada, so everything has to be imported from somewhere else. We're actually quite lucky in the United States. One of my followers is in Pago Pago, and she can't find batting anywhere on the island. Her husband is going to buy her some on his trip to Hawaii. Like I said, we're lucky in the US!
Happy quilting,
Susan

Up here in Alaska, it's hard to find fabric for less than $10 per yard. Even on clearance, it's still $8. I have bought material at $16 per yard for a one black wonder class. Ouch!!
I'm in Iowa. I have a hard time paying anything over $9.50 a yard. I think that is a psychological thing...and the over $10/yard is a psychological barrier that may keep some companies and shops from going above...but I have been wrong before...
Most of ours are in the $8.50-9.50 range.
If you buy fabrics in spain they are 12 to 15 EUROS!!! a meter, that is much much much more expensive than 10 usd... 10 USD in my dreams here...
;(((
love
marta from spain that of course buys a lot on the internet
Over here in New Zealand we are paying on average between $20 and $30 per metre due to the exchange rate, and have been for more 10 years. It does hurt and becomes a very expensive pasttime.
Unfortunately, I frequently have no choice but to pay $10 or more a yard. In Canada most of our fabric is imported from the States and once you add the mark-up and exchange rate many fabrics here start at $12-13 a metre and go up from there. I'm in Calgary where good fabric is hard to find, but even on my last trip to Toronto I was shocked at how expensive everything was! I'd buy online, on sale but after the exchange rate and shipping a good "deal" for me is still aroun $9-10 a metre. Oh well, I love it so much I just can't stop.
Here in Australia, at patchwork shops, i pay between $20 to $30 a metre depending on the manufacturer. At the local Bargain Box I pay on average $12 a metre for those very same fabrics. Why the difference in price i have no idea. Yes it does hurt the pocket to buy at patchwork shops but what choice do we have when it's all taxed as it's imported
Wow...I didn't know fabric had crossed the ten dollar mark...the most I've ever paid is nine fifty a yard...and that was really hard!
I am that way with beads -- the mark kept inching up. The most I've paid for one bead (and granted, it was a big focal bead) was $75. And of course it's going to stay mine, not put into a piece of jewelry to sell! Good lord, the price I'd have to charge!
LOL! The spam blocker word verification for my last post was (I kid you not) "cheap" and now it's "expen"!
Yowza! I probably would, but wouldn't admit it! ;)
It's funny because most quilt shops said they had to raise prices due to the high gas prices, but now that the gas prices have gone down, what's the excuse?
I DO believe in paying more for a better quality, but where's the cap?
I guess the fabric companies know they got us good with this addiction we have!! Maybe we need an intervention??
I would be elated if I found fabric like that for $10/yard! Here in the area of southern Ontario in which I live prices between $16 and $20 a yard are the norm. :-( I think this may be another good reason to take up doing miniature quilts!
Our local store here has fabric as high as $11.99! I can't bring myself to spend that ... I wait for the sales or % off coupons. Although I have spent $10 per yard in the past. It was for this fabric called Bella Baby in pinks and browns that I just HAD to have to make a rag quilt.
I just posted a photo of an Amy Butler quilt on my blog. The price of that fabric is $10 but thank goodness it is for a shop sample and I didn't actually pay for it.
I have paid over $10 a yard, but usually not for cotton. I would pay what you paid for the background with the red in it. I love red & white fabrics and now I'm going to have to look at the fabrics you made your apron out of because I really really like them...lol
Well it is beautiful. I've paid more than that a yard for vintage and or Japanese fabric. I try to only buy those things in tiny pieces though - if possible. If I have to have it then oh well, I have to have it! Sometimes.
It's cheap for me. Here in Holland, we pay between 12 and 16 Euro's per meter, which is between 15 and 20 US $. So I think we get to buy diamonds her LOL.
Just thought I would add to this post....very late I know.
Quilting is a very expensive hobby in Australia....we pay anything from $20 - $30 per metre (yard) here for the good fabrics and can pick up some cheaper cotton fabrics for $12 - $15 per metre.
There is of course a noticeable difference in Quality!
Many of us here work to quilt.....personally I would have reduced my working hours in the past year if I did not want to continue my craft.
But....having said that - like you I am not complaining either because I would not have it any other way!
take care
Vanessa
