Dear Jane Night

This month was Dear Jane Night at our Alpine Quilt Group. It was really a lot of fun hearing about Jane's quilt and to see some of the completed Dear Jane Quilts and Dear Jane's that are in varying processes of completion. Some of the ladies also shared stories of a trip that several of them made back to Vermont to see Jane's Quilt. It was fun listening to their adventures.

I've been following an online group of Dear Jane fanatics at that quilt for over a year now but I'm not actively current at the moment. Go check out Anina's blog, she creates wonderful tutorials on each block and it's so fun to follow along. Personally, I still only have 14 blocks done and over 150 more to go and that's not even counting the border blocks. After seeing the Dear Jane quilts tonight, I am inspired to keep going. One quilter in our group said that she's on the 30 year plan. I'm not too far behind her. lol!

I'm sure you can guess which color of Dear Jane Quilt was my favorite...

Look closely at this quilt.
Can you guess what's different about this Dear Jane?

I just love how this quilt looks. If you look closely you will see that each block is machine embroidered. Clever, huh? She used white thread on red fabric and red thread on white fabric and alternated the blocks. I absolutely love how this turned out. Even the borders are beautifully done. Someone asked how much thread she went through and she said that it only took 2 big spools of white and 2 big spools of red thread to make the blocks.

I do have to apologize that I was 30 minutes late to quilting so I missed all of the show n' tell. I really hate missing show n' tell. I know it's the best part but I just had to make my blocks for the last month of our block exchanges. I totally forgot!

Below you will see a quilt that my friend, Dianna made from the blocks we've been exchanging for the last 9 months. Don't you just love it? The center is actually a panel.

I've been burning my candle at both ends and in the middle too! Heck, I'm not sure if I have any candle left. Ha! Ha! Ha! I'm really sorry I've not been blogging much lately either but I will try to do a few more posts this week or weekend. I've been reading as many blogs as I have time for and love every minute I can take to visit all of you. I hope you're having a great week so far.

I'll be doing a Halloween post to show you all of the costume sewing I've been doing. I have one done, one nearly done, and two more to go maybe part of a third one too. I know! Call me CRAZY!! That's my name lately!!

Dear Jane Blocks

Well, I'm moving along like a very slow turtle or maybe I should say a sloth but, I am making some progress as you can see below. I sure hope I can do better once I get back from a friends daughters wedding and I get Kenna back into school August 18th. She starts fourth grade this year, I can't believe it. Maybe then I'll have some more free time.

Also, my two middle children move back to college toward the end of summer. I sure will miss them (not the messes though) and it will be pretty boring around here! It'll be down to Mark and I and our little sweet cream, McKenna. She's gonna miss her 3 older siblings. Luckily, she has a niece and nephew that come over and visit us 2-3 times a week.

5th Annual Home Machine Quilting Show

My friends and I went to the HMQS show at the South Towne Expo Center this past Thursday. We didn't have time to attend any of the classes but we were able to see the quilt show along with visiting the vendor market. We had fun buying a few civil war prints and shirtings for our "OMIGOSH" quilt and our "Dear Jane Quilts". We've been really busy cutting all the fabric we'll need for the Omigosh quilt. What a task doing it all at once but now we can get to it and start sewing. if you're interested you can purchase the "Omigosh" pattern by Quakertown Quilts for $9.99 at Village Dry Goods in Brigham City. I'm sure you can find it elsewhere too.

We were truly impressed by "The Supper" a quilt made by Dr. Donald E. Locke D.D.S. The pictures are copyrighted so I didn't upload them but you can click on the above title to go to his website and have a look. Of course, it's far more impressive in person. The quilt is made up of 51,816 squares of 1/2 inch cotton fabric. The quilt measures 183" x 67". I got to talk with him and asked him a few questions. I'm sure many of you would have asked this question, "How long did it take you to make the quilt?" He said, "Two and a half years". I really thought it would take longer with how small the squares were. I also asked what number quilt this was for him and he said it was his second quilt. WOW!!! He told me that he's on quilt number seven.

I took a picture of only one quilt because it caught my eye. It's a red, white, and blue version of Dear Jane made by a local quilter. Her name is Sue Baddley. I hope she doesn't mind my taking a picture of her quilt but it's wonderful and she did an awesome job.

Baby Jane Blocks

I've wanted to make this quilt for some time now and when I saw that my friend, Nanette had signed up to make it I thought I would check into it as well. I was worried that it may be too late but, come to find out I was only 3 or 4 blocks behind and I knew that I could do it so, I signed up to make the Dear Jane Quilt on March 13th, 2008. I'm just now catching up and as of today the group has made 11 blocks and I've completed 8 of the 11 and have the 3 remaining blocks prepped and ready to applique. I should be caught up by tomorrow. I've also included pictures of the blocks I've made so far.

I chose to use Civil War prints since I have quite a few and that way I won't have to buy very much. Just some colors to fill in the blanks. So far I've found that I need more red, browns, and yellows. Also, I'm making it easy on myself and just keeping the color of each block as true to the original as possible. It won't look exactly the same but pretty close. I've really enjoyed expanding my techniques and using my experience to make these blocks. Don't get me wrong, I still make mistakes, like on K-7 Rose of Sharing. I'm in the process of remaking it. Can anyone figure out why? There is a reason and I'll tell you if I don't get any responses. LOL!
